I just wanted to touch on some key points you should keep in mind when you are ready to Go for it!
Don't worry it won't hurt :)
- You don't have to cut all your hair off to go natural. This is a common misconception. You can grow your perm out or cut it all off also known as the "Big Chop." If you decide to grow your perm out, please know that your permed hair is going to break off during your transition, but this is OK because natural hair is a lot stronger and healthier than your permed hair. Many people decide to camouflage their hair during this process with braids and weaves because their hair is straight on the ends and kinky at the roots. Overtime, you can get your permed ends cut off. It's OK to do it little by little. This is what I did. (I will post some good transitioning hairstyles later)
- Just because your hair is transitioning it is still important to get it washed and conditioned on a regular basis. This honestly becomes more important because you are starting fresh and want to get off on the right foot.
- If you decide to do the big chop, its pretty low maintenance. It is also easier because you don't have to worry about combining the natural and permed hair. As mentioned before make sure you still use the key elements to keep your hair healthy (i.e. washing and conditioning every week if possible, if not two weeks)
- Some people tend to think that when you go natural it is a open invite to dying your hair. I don't really recommend this. Especially in the beginning stages of your natural transition. Give your hair sometime to get rid of all the chemicals. I honestly have never dyed mine. It is a big risk I'm not willing to take. For fear of it being dry and not being the same as before I dyed it.
- Whether you decide to do the big chop or taking it little at a time with growing it out, please know that going natural is a process not an overnight creation. The growth of it is the beauty behind it.
Think of your hair as a beautiful flower that you have planted and you have to keep it alive. It needs to be watered (Shampooed ), fertilized (Conditioned) and maintained (Moisturized).
Of course drinking plenty of water goes right along with all of it. Our loves it. :)
