I'm Scarrrrreeeddd: Things to Know Before Going Natural

It can be a little scary going natural. Let's face it! It's the fear of the unknown and a woman's hair is her pride and joy. Am I right?

I just wanted to touch on some key points you should keep in mind when you are ready to Go for it!

Don't worry it won't hurt :)
  • You don't have to cut all your hair off to go natural. This is a common misconception. You can grow your perm out or cut it all off also known as the "Big Chop." If you decide to grow your perm out, please know that your permed hair is going to break off during your transition, but this is OK because natural hair is a lot stronger and healthier than your permed hair. Many people decide to camouflage their hair during this process with braids and weaves because their hair is straight on the ends and kinky at the roots. Overtime, you can get your permed ends cut off. It's OK to do it little by little. This is what I did. (I will post some good transitioning hairstyles later)

  • Just because your hair is transitioning it is still important to get it washed and conditioned on a regular basis. This honestly becomes more important because you are starting fresh and want to get off on the right foot.
  • If you decide to do the big chop, its pretty low maintenance. It is also easier because you don't have to worry about combining the natural and permed hair. As mentioned before make sure you still use the key elements to keep your hair healthy (i.e. washing and conditioning every week if possible, if not two weeks)
  • Some people tend to think that when you go natural it is a open invite to dying your hair. I don't really recommend this. Especially in the beginning stages of your natural transition. Give your hair sometime to get rid of all the chemicals. I honestly have never dyed mine. It is a big risk I'm not willing to take. For fear of it being dry and not being the same as before I dyed it.
  • Whether you decide to do the big chop or taking it little at a time with growing it out, please know that going natural is a process not an overnight creation. The growth of it is the beauty behind it.

Think of your hair as a beautiful flower that you have planted and you have to keep it alive. It needs to be watered (Shampooed ), fertilized (Conditioned) and maintained (Moisturized).

Of course drinking plenty of water goes right along with all of it. Our loves it. :)

Disclaimer: These tips are from the experiences of myself, family and friends. It's always important to carefully think through what may work for you.

"Good Hair": The Documentary Feature Film with Chris Rock

So I'm pretty sure many of you have heard about this documentary film "Good Hair."
The
Sun Dance Film Festival Presented this film earlier this year.
Camera's follow around Comedian Chris Rock as he take a funny and yet serious approach to the myths behind "Good Hair" and "Bad Hair."
The documentary goes on a journey to hair salons and has deep discussing about everything we talk about. Styling, straightening, the ideas of beauty and the rule most black men know. ... never put your hands in a black woman's head.

Some in the film, refer to relaxers and perms as "creamy crack."

Good Hair will feature interviews from funny man Paul Mooney, Nia Long, Raven Symone and Al Sharpton just to name a few.
Earlier this year the film had limited screenings, but there is some good news for those interested.
The film is expected to hit theaters this October.

In Living Color: Black Barbie Graces Italian Vogue

Last July, Vogue editor France Sozzani stepped up and decided to create an issue of the magazine with all black models. Yup! I think I missed that. Anyway, Mr. Sozzani wanted to address the lack of color between the pages and overall view of beauty.

This year's July anniversary issue will not solely be dedicated to black models, but will have a dedication to black barbie dolls.

According to Vogue, Sozzani says "Barbie has been an icon for a whole generation which is why I really wanted to give strong sign in step with the times, and dedicate the anniversary issue to black barbie."
Also Check out Essence.com They have a slide show of some dynamic black barbies.
So what you think? Do you remember playing with black barbie?

It's Time to Get High! Naturally High that is!!!

Here we go!! The kickoff to my Natural Hair and Beauty blog. I have wanted to do this for sometime and with the support of my family and friends here it is!!

I decided to go natural close to ten years ago.

Since then, I have enjoyed every minute of it and consider it one of the best decisions in my life.
I continue to enjoy introducing people to becoming natural as well as share the different elements with in it (i.e. styling, conditioning, the love etc.).

So that's why I have made this creation in blog format. :)

Natural High is meant to inspire, tutor and share the love of being natural with not only your hair but with yourself.
No additives or special formulas just you being you and loving every minute of it.
Disclaimer: This blog is in no way meant to lashout or slander those with perms or relaxers.
Rather it's just a collection of personal experiences from myself as well as family and friends.
It will also share elements through any different elements (i.e. entertainment, news, hobbies etc.).
It doesn't come from any special classroom taught knowledge with a degree in hair or license attached, but in my opinion, the best lesson learned is shared knowledge through experience and growth.

All this goodness is dedicated to anyone that lets and dares to let their natural beauty shine :)
